One Year Later : The night Minneapolis Said Goodbye to Prince

I remember this night like it was yesterday.  I was asked by Vice.com to cover the evening as our city spontaneously gathered to mourn the loss of Prince, the man so prolific and universally adored he had his own color.  Everyone in Minneapolis has a Prince story or two, mine are all wordless sightings with a side of smiles and (maybe once??) eye contact. My favorite memory is waiting all day in the hot sun to get tickets to see him perform at First Ave after the release of 3121.  That evening we waited for hours until -around 2am- he finally took the stage.   He was so small and so much larger than life and the energy he brought was the most palpable I have ever felt from anyone on stage. I have never danced harder or lost myself so completely in a show. We left hours later, opening the doors onto a completely deserted city, quiet and empty except for five police on horseback, lined up and completely still.  The sight has stayed with me years later and I think of that stillness and that electric energy and the way I felt a part of a great explosion of music and magic.

I am still not ready for a world without Prince.  Our city feels different, somehow smaller and less on fire.

The Beauty of Play!

I love this little family.  You can see their authentic connection and their joy and energy!  Making photos with kids is always an adventure and I love the way their spontaneity brings a special kind of magic.

Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it. This will transform everything

I need help welcoming fall...

I know I am supposed to be slipping on my chunky sweaters and boots and singing the praises of pumpkins and cider but I am NOT there yet.  I want to ring out every last minute of Summer.  This time of year I start to gently remind myself of little things I love about the coming season.  I think about bonfires (better on the beach!) and rediscovering the back of my closet full of warm clothes (I'd rather wear a tank top!) and any other (futile!) attempt to lure me into welcoming fall.

But... then I remember shoots like this one.  Cool enough for rosy cheeks and sweaters but warm enough to be outside as long as we want to be.  Colors popping up in unexpected places and beautiful families at play.   If you aren't quite ready for Fall let's have one last summer shoot!  If you are in full on fall mode - help me transition! I have opened up extra spaces next weekend to try to squeeze out the last little bit of summer OR maybe remind myself that Fall in Minnesota really is a stunner. Get in touch and we'll make some great photos of your favorite season.

First Day of School! TIME FLIES

The first day of school has always had such magic.  As a kid, later as a teacher, even as a freelancer, I always feel the unique mix of excitement and nerves that are present at the start of something brand new!  In the past few years I have started to see a side of the first day I hadn't noticed before: The Parents.  The mix of relief and sadness as another summer ends and their littles climb the impossibly big steps onto that school bus. "When did they get so big?" "How is my baby in kindergarden?!" "When did he get taller than us?"

So! Here's to new beginnings! Here's to the bittersweet milestones!  Here's to the kiddos that have stolen our hearts.  Happy First Day to all the littles out there!  Get in touch this fall and we'll do our best to freeze this moment in time!

Hans - 8 Months

My dear (and extremely talented) friend Angie not only has two of the cutest kids you've ever seen, she has also managed to schedule tons of regular photo shoots as her little guys grow up.  Even when baby number two arrived she and her husband made sure he didn't suffer the fate of so many second children and end up with an empty baby book.  Here is her second little guy (8 months) in his third photo shoot so far.  Keep it up, Angie! Wanna follow in her footsteps?  I offer great first year packages that fit every budget and any schedule.

PS- Busy Parents Rejoice!  This shoot took less than 30 minutes!

White Sands National Monument - New Mexico

I traveled to New Mexico this spring and was reminded of how enchanting the land of enchantment can be.  It was my first trip to White Sands and the place won my heart.  If you ever find yourself in the southwest, do yourself a favor and stop by.

I was drawn to photograph these daredevils and they insisted I join them.  If I wasn't Minnesotan to the core I would sing the praises of Sand Sledding from the rooftops! It was fabulous!

Anna and Bryan's Orchard Wedding Will Warm Your Heart

In this frozen season I often find myself longing for spring.  I want to grab my keys, slip on shoes and leave the house unbundled to meet a cheerful sunny day.  When things get really bad (Hello, March in Minnesota!) I find myself sipping tea and pouring over images of gorgeous spring weddings.  Wanna Join me?

Nothing says Spring like an Apple Orchard!  Anna is the life-long friend of my partner so when this fantastic woman found Bryan I was thrilled.  She is a beautiful, authentic, intentional woman and I knew her wedding day would be all of those things.   When she sent me a beautiful email asking me to be her photographer (with a generous wide-open 'out' in case I wanted to “just be a guest”)  I couldn’t say “YES” Fast enough!

Anna and Bryan were married at Bryan's Uncle’s Apple Orchard on a picture perfect day surrounded by all the people they love.  So, get cozy, grab a honeycrisp and take a stroll through their sunny, oh-so-warm day!

Love,

Amy
